The A,B,C of AnxietyApr 11, 2022
Anxiety is caused by a fear of the unknown, a worry over future events and a want to control them!
It all starts with a simple little thought, What if? We each have very unique and specific "what ifs" linked to previous events and learnings throughout life. In this course you will discover, challenge, and distich a need to control or know the answer to life's "what ifs."
A: Autonomic ( physical symptoms).
B: Behavioural (things you do or don't do).
C: Cognitive (thoughts).
Anxiety is a combination of all three areas, along with a fourth area of Feeling.
D: Feeling (an emotion)
Let's run through a potential situation where an individual experiences anxiety. Try to see what caused the feeling of anxiety, and also where it is felt and then stored in the body! Can you relate to this situation? Can you see how to better avoid the negative effects of anxiety in the future, due to the fact you are not experiencing the event first hand and so have an alternative perspective? What advice would you give to a person in a similar situation, what advice would you give yourself?
: E.g You've been invited out to a meal for your friend's Birthday party at the weekend, but are nervous about going due to what others "will" think about you. (They "will" want to know why you have missed the last few events you were invited to, and "will" think of you as rude or that you don't like them as you cancelled on them last time without a "real" excuse. They "will" all be talking about you behind your back and "will" have already decided that you won't turn up for the meal, so it's easier to simply not go). This is how with the fog of anxiety weighing over and clouding your thinking process, one simple thought can turn into the predetermined and negative outcome of a future event. One that you have already decided will be negative. In doing so you condemn yourself to the internal battle that is to come.
: A Thought leads to an action, where your attention goes your energy flows and what you focus upon grows! So you "think" about a future event with a negative perspective and this creates a "feeling" of worry. You will likely then "feel" this state within your physical body, dizziness or light-headedness, stomach pains or a sickly feeling, shortness of breath or a tight feeling in the chest, etc. It is a very useful process to note where you embody the feeling of worry or stress, as it allows you to notice when you start on the vicious cycle of anxiety and to nip it in the bud before it takes control.
: Having had a negatively perceived thought and experiencing a feeling of stress and worry within the body, next you will likely revert to running a predesignated programs or behaviours. One such as avoiding a situation that may cause a feeling of worry or stress at any and all costs, even if it limits your feelings of happiness or freedom in life! Avoid danger at all costs is the program running and I will explain not only why this runs but how we can remove it during this course!
: So you've had a negative thought, which has lead to experiencing a physical symptom, which in turn leads to blindly running a certain program or behaviour. Next comes the emotional response, the feeling of fear, anger, or the most common one of all GUILT. A feeling of guilt for the negative implications your state of anxiety causes to your own life, but more importantly to other people's lives. (I always ruin other peoples day with my anxiety, I'm supposed to be working on controlling my anxiety, Why am I so useless at everything I do), ETC. It's clear to see how this becomes a vicious cycle that is very easy to get stuck in. The negative emotion leads to further negative thoughts, which lead to further negative behaviours or physical symptoms in the body. Before you've had a moment to think you're trapped within the the vicious cycle of Anxiety, with no idea how to stop it or get off the roundabout of suffering! All it takes is a simple refocus technique, which will change your focus of attention, One just like the first technique shared in Step 1. Remember where your attention goes your energy flows and what you focus upon grows! *The cycle of Anxiety can take any route around the circle, and may be more present in one area compared to another for some people. You might feel that you only ever think negatively when experiencing Anxiety, or that it's only a certain behaviour that triggers an anxious state. Yet if you take a moment to stop and "watch" yourself you will notice a physical sensation somewhere in your body, a thought that is running in the background of your mind, a emotion that you are experiencing such as fear, and a certain program / behaviour you are running, such as to avoid danger at all costs.
EXITING THE ROUNDABOUT!
Firstly you are not your behaviours, or your thoughts. You are a being of light with the same potential and rights to happiness in life as everyone else. Your thoughts are happening within your mind and your behaviours are being acted out by your body, but you are so much more than these aspects of the self. You are the eternal soul that is housed within the body and connected to the mind, and your potential to achieve your wildest dreams is within your reach. After completing this course you will have the foundations needed to build your dream life from, and I will assist you all the way!
So Picture yourself as a computer! Born blank you learn and install various programs or behaviours throughout your childhood. Programs given to you by your peers, or learnt through your experiences and personal interpretation of external events. You collect information between the ages of 0-7, and use it to create subconscious programs and your view of the world between the ages of 7-11. Between 11-15 you then decide your place within society and friendship groups, along with the desire to express your unique self, dressing and acting in a way that reflects how you want the world to see you. So what has all this got to do with Anxiety? Well everything and nothing at all! Anxiety is a normal response to danger and essential for our very survival, it is when it becomes a negative and unwanted state that we must do something about controlling our response and relationship with it! We can't remove anxiety from your life, but what we can do is remove all negative attachments to it, as well as removing it as a response in any circumstance that does not warrant it. If being chased by a bare then feeling anxious is beneficial, if needing to go to the shops to buy food for your dinner then it is not!
By the time you reach the age of 21, you’ve already permanently stored more than one hundred times the contents of the entire Encyclopaedia Britannica. Under hypnosis, people can often remember, with perfect clarity, events from their entire lifetime, as far back as their birth . Your unconscious / subconscious memory is virtually perfect. It is your conscious recall that often distorts events due to your personal perspective of them.
The function of your subconscious mind is to store and retrieve data. Its job is to ensure that you respond in exactly the way you are programmed to, even if this is not actually the most beneficial response. Your subconscious mind makes everything you say and do fit a pattern consistent with your self-concept, your “master program.” This is why Repeating positive affirmations and having a positive outlook on life are so powerful. You can actually reprogram your own thought patterns by adding in positive and success-oriented leanings, which in time become hardwired beliefs. This is why motivational activities, such as reading inspiring quotes, are so impactful for people committed to positive thinking. By focusing your thoughts on uplifting ideas, your subconscious will begin to implement a positive pattern in your way of thinking and your outlook on life. Positivity breeds positivity, and vice versa!
